Overlay Specifications
To understand Overlay Specifications you must first understand the two terms Overlay and Reveal.

Overlay is the amount of the cabinet face frame that is covered by the doors & drawer front. Our cabinet face frames are 1 1/2" wide. A 15" wide cabinet would have a door opening of 12". If the door itself is 13" wide it would overlay the frame 1/2" on each side. Therefore it would be called a 1/2" overlay. Most traditional cabinetry features a 1/2" overlay. If the door was 14 1/2" wide it would overlay the frame 1 1/4" on each side. Therefore it would be a 1 1/4" overlay. Normally the amount of overlay for the top & bottom will be the same amount as the sides.

Reveal refers to the amount of frame left showing (or revealed) after the door is on the cabinet. The 15" wide cabinet with a 13" door would have 1" of frame left showing on each side of the door & would be referred to as a 1" reveal. The 1 1/4" overlay door would produce a 1/4" reveal.

Modified Overlay Modified Overlay Picture
The Modified Overlay gives you the ability to hang crown mold directly to the cabinet without needing an extra nailer strip added to the top on a full overlay cabinet. With a 1" reveal at the top you drop your crown mold down 3/4" and nail. This then leaves 1/4" between bottom of crown and top of door which matches the rest of the 1/4" reveal. The Modified Overlay Reveal can be increased to accommodate wide crown molding when ceiling clearance is a problem. This is very handy when installing cabinetry directly against ceiling. Most cabinetry does not leave you enough room to install a crown mold when cabinets are against ceiling. With this feature you can install any size crown you want.
